According to Sky Sports, Liverpool have pulled off one of the most sensational transfers in Premier League history by agreeing a British-record £125 million deal to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United.
In a Deadline Day twist that will dominate the football world for weeks, the Sweden international is now set to complete his move to Anfield, with medicals scheduled for Monday morning ahead of penning a six-year contract.
“Liverpool and Newcastle have agreed a British-record transfer for Alexander Isak,” reports Mark McAdam of Sky Sports, confirming the Reds’ aggressive push to secure their new number nine.
The staggering fee eclipses the £115m Chelsea paid Brighton for Moises Caicedo in the summer of 2023, underlining Liverpool’s determination to reinforce their attack under Arne Slot and usher in a new era at Anfield.
The journey to this monumental deal has been turbulent. Earlier in August, Liverpool tabled an offer worth £110m plus add-ons, only for Newcastle to reject it.
At the time, the Magpies were adamant they would not part with their star forward for less than £150m. However, Isak’s growing frustration with the situation turned the tide. The striker reportedly refused to train or play with his teammates, pushing hard for the move that would see him step into the role of Liverpool’s marquee striker.
Sky Sports reveals that Newcastle’s willingness to negotiate was also influenced by their own transfer dealings.
The club-record signing of Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart, a deal worth up to £69m, gave the Magpies the confidence to sanction Isak’s exit. Still, the saga is far from over for Eddie Howe’s side, who are scrambling to secure a replacement.
Their striker hunt has been complicated. Newcastle are still working to replace Callum Wilson, who left on a free transfer at the end of last season.
They have seen multiple bids rejected for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa and Wolves’ Jorgen Strand-Larsen, leaving the Magpies under immense pressure heading into the final hours of the window.
In a dramatic twist, Wissa has added fuel to the fire by sensationally demanding a transfer away from Brentford on the eve of Deadline Day. Taking to Instagram, the striker expressed frustration at his failed move, insisting he had “written assurances” that he could leave.
Brentford, however, remain tight-lipped, refusing to comment on Wissa’s explosive claims, while Sky Sports notes they have not seen evidence of such assurances.
