Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has criticised Labour Party chieftain Peter Obi over recent comments in which Obi referred to Nigeria as a “now disgraced country.” Omokri said this was the second time in a week that Obi made such a remark and described the statement as inappropriate for someone who wants to lead the nation.
Omokri said Obi’s comments appear to have intensified after his recent trip to Washington, D.C., between September 23 and 25. He accused Obi of using national security incidents for political advantage, including the death of Brigadier-General M. Uba and the abduction of 25 girls.
According to Omokri, the late General Uba should be honoured, not used in political discussions. He compared the situation to the 2014 killing of Major General Harold Greene of the United States Army, noting that the incident did not make Americans describe their country as “disgraced.”
Omokri said events like terrorist attacks happen in many nations and should not be used to undermine the image of the country. He added that members of the Nigerian Armed Forces may view Obi’s comments as disrespectful, especially toward fallen officers.
He ended his statement by urging political leaders to avoid remarks that could demoralise security personnel or politicise national tragedies.
