Arsenal have been urged to prioritise the signing of Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez this summer, with pundit Ally McCoist claiming the Argentine would represent a clear improvement on current striker Viktor Gyokeres as per reports from Talksport on Tuesday May 26, 2026.
Gyokeres joined the Gunners from Sporting CP last summer and has contributed 21 goals across all competitions in his debut season.
The Swedish forward remains in contention to add to that tally when Arsenal face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final this weekend, having scored five times in the competition throughout the campaign.
Despite the north London club finishing the season as Premier League champions, registering 71 league goals in the process, questions are now being raised about whether the frontline needs further reinforcement heading into next season.
Arsenal have reportedly shown interest in Alvarez, who carries a £130 million price tag, with Atletico Madrid believed to be open to selling. Barcelona are also monitoring the 26-year-old, who contributed eight league goals this term.
Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist suggested the former Manchester City man would elevate Arsenal’s attacking options. “I do think Alvarez would be a step up. I think he’s got a bit more quality,” the Scottish pundit said.
McCoist was careful not to dismiss Gyokeres entirely, acknowledging the striker had grown into his role as the season progressed and that further development remains possible under Mikel Arteta.
With the Champions League final approaching, Arteta faces a selection headache. While Gyokeres has been his preferred centre forward throughout the tournament, the Spaniard may reassess his striking options regardless of the outcome in Paris.
