Super Eagles and Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen is the subject of a lawsuit filed by German automaker Mercedes-Benz over an alleged unpaid car lease from his time playing in Italy.

Mercedes-Benz Financial Services Italia S.p.A. submitted a formal criminal complaint in Milan, accusing the 2023 CAF Player of the Year of failing to meet financial obligations tied to a luxury vehicle. 

The dispute involves a Mercedes GLE hybrid SUV that Osimhen reportedly acquired under a leasing contract in 2023 while he was still with Napoli.

According to the complaint, the 27-year-old striker failed to make several installment payments, leading to arrears of approximately €90,000 (roughly ₦144 million). Furthermore, company representatives allege that the vehicle was not returned once the leasing term expired.

The legal action categorizes the situation as “misappropriation.” As of now, neither Osimhen nor his legal team have issued a public response to the allegations.

The report has caused a stir given Osimhen’s high-profile earnings. He was earning approximately €10 million per season in Italy before his 2024 move to Turkish side Galatasaray, where his annual salary is reported to be over €18 million. Despite the legal complications, Osimhen recently celebrated a victory over Fenerbahce, scoring his first goal in over a month.

Known for his love of luxury cars, Osimhen was often spotted in a customized sky-blue Mercedes G-Class in Naples and was recently seen driving a Lamborghini Revuelto during a trip to Lagos.

The Premier League trophy has been delivered to the Etihad Stadium, signaling the final phase of the 2025/26 title race as the season approaches its conclusion.

With only a handful of fixtures remaining, the presence of the trophy at the home ground of Manchester City has intensified speculation over the eventual champions. League officials typically position the trophy at the venue of the team most likely to secure the title on the final day, although contingency plans remain in place should outcomes change.

Manchester City are among the leading contenders, but they continue to face competition from other top clubs in a closely contested race. Points margins at the top of the table remain narrow, leaving the title undecided heading into the final matchdays.

Managers and players have maintained a cautious stance, emphasizing focus on remaining fixtures rather than external expectations. The arrival of the trophy, however, underlines the significance of the upcoming games and the high stakes involved.

The Premier League has consistently delivered dramatic conclusions in recent seasons, and this campaign appears no different, with multiple teams still mathematically in contention.

Former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger’s “daylight” offside rule has been used for the first time in a competitive match – and fans aren’t quite sure what to make of it.

Since taking up the position of FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development in 2019, Wenger, who managed Arsenal between 1996 and 2018, has put forward several ideas he believes could improve the modern game.

One of the changes he has supported is an alteration to the offside law, which has been dubbed the “daylight” offside rule.

The daylight rule means an attacker can only be offside if there is a clear gap – or “daylight” – between them and the last defender. Even if part of the attacker’s body is in a traditional offside position, play continues as normal under the new regulation.

The Frenchman first proposed the change around six years ago, although the traditional offside rule has remained in place until now.

However, Wenger’s rule has been trialled by the Canadian Premier League, with the first goal allowed under the experimental rule coming on Saturday, as Pacific FC striker Alejandro Díaz scored in a 2–2 draw against Halifax Wanderers.

The goal would have been ruled out under the traditional International Football Association Board (IFAB) rules.

Speaking about the daylight rule in a previous interview, Wenger explained: “In case of doubt, the doubt benefits the striker. That means when there’s a fraction, the striker does get the advantage. With VAR, this advantage has disappeared and, for many people, it’s frustrating.
“That’s why I proposed that, as long as any part of your body is on the same line as the defender, you’re not ~offside.”

But what do fans think?

Thousands have viewed the new rule in action, and it’s fair to say supporters are divided.

After watching the rule used in the Canadian Premier League, one said: “It’s taken one goal to show how stupid a rule change this would be. One, it’s still a line decision given by a millimetre, so it changes nothing. Two, it’s going to force defenders further and further back until there are lines of defenders playing so deep that the game becomes unwatchable.”

Another added: “Pointless. No real change to the interpretation of offside. Making it harder for officials on the pitch. Bin this idea now and revert to the law the rest of the world is using.”

A third claimed: “Imagine being an assistant referee in a non-VAR or grassroots league. It’s easy to see a white shirt is ahead of a blue shirt. It’s virtually impossible to see daylight with the movement of eight to ten players. Wenger – good coach, awful rule inventor.”~

Former Premier League player, Yannick Bolasie, has criticized Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi following the Gunners’ 2-1 defeat to AFC Bournemouth.

He asserted that they were playing too conservatively, while goalkeeper David Raya was taking greater risks.

In a post on X, Bolasie remarked that Raya had more touches of the ball than the attacking players.

He further stated that both the players and the fans are overly focused on statistics, commenting, “All comes from Raya dancing on the ball like he has all game. When your back line is touching the ball more than any offensive players it’s a big problem, dead stats people get rated for these days.”

Raya attempted 49 passes during the match, successfully completing 38, whereas Rice managed 43 successful passes out of 50 attempts.

Zubimendi had only 38 attempted passes, with 29 completed, while the third midfielder, Kai Havertz, recorded 17 successful passes from 22 attempts.

Bolasie criticized the midfielders for their overly cautious play and stated, “Of course your pass rates gonna be 95% if you’re always passing backwards and side to side, same way wingers who don’t lose the ball aren’t trying to take on the full backs….safety first.

“Raya passing the ball more than Declan Rice or Zubimendi is the strange thing about football today, the players with the least attacking ability touching and passing the most.”

Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat has resulted in them missing the chance to extend their lead to 12 points over Manchester City.

They currently hold a nine-point advantage over the Cityzens, who have two games in hand, with the top two teams set to face each other next week.

Arsène Wenger’s proposed offside reform finally moves from the drawing board to the pitch. Starting April 4th, the new regulation will officially launch, with the Canadian league serving as the global testing ground.

The move, championed by FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, aims to end “toenail” offsides and restore a clear advantage to attacking play.

What is the New Rule?

The current “any scoring part of the body” rule is being flipped on its head. Under the new “Daylight” rule:

To be ONSIDE: An attacker is considered onside if any part of their body that can score a goal is in line with the second-to-last defender.

To be OFFSIDE: The attacker must be completely past the defender. There must be visible “daylight” between the two players for the whistle to blow.

FIFA’s Objectives

In an official statement, FIFA outlined the reasoning behind the trial:

“This new rule should give attackers a slight advantage and help matches flow more smoothly. By reducing the number of marginal calls, we aim to encourage more goals and fewer VAR-induced celebrations-delays.”
